Anthrax cover-up: a government insider speaks out (AfterDowningStreet)

Aging U.S. sewers ready to burst (Treehugger)

War on Hawaii (Bella Ciao)

Shutting down transparent government, Bush style (Alternet) How the Bush government is now trying to prevent you from being able to use the Freedom of Information Act.In former Mexican president Vicente Fox’s new autobiography, he refers to Bush as “the cockiest guy I have every met” (SwapPolitics)

Department of Defense taking bids to outsource $15B War on Drugs – now War on NarcoTerror (DefenseNews)

EXCERPT: “One participant is ARINC, a Maryland-based provider of airline communications systems…. other participating vendors are defense giants Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, and security contractor Blackwater USA. Blackwater confirmed its participation, but the other three vendors did not respond to inquiries.”

U.S. government has been planning to build a nuclear waste dump on a FAULT LINE! (Guardian, UK)

EXCERPT: “The most expensive public works project in the US was today in disarray after it emerged that a planned giant nuclear dump would be located on a faultline.  Rock samples from deep within Yucca Mountain, in Nevada, showed that the fault runs directly beneath the site where the US federal government planned to store 70,000 tonnes of highly radioactive waste.  More than $8 Billion has already been spent on the $58bn project, which had been due to open in 2017, but the proposals – approved by George Bush in 2002 – may now have to be redrawn.”

Bush the First’s pool boy speaks out (San Francisco Chronicle)

EXCERPTS: “If every American had to pool-boy for these people for a day, you’d have a revolution on your hands” … Razsa recalls one day when former first lady Barbara Bush was on her way over, and it looked like there wouldn’t be time to bring the pool’s temperature up to her desired 82 degrees in time. The family’s caretaker was in a panic, he says.  He kept shouting, ‘Barbara will go crazy! Barbara will go crazy!’ Razsa recalls. “This is the same woman who after Hurricane Katrina said (of the Houston Astrodome refugees), ‘You know, they’re underprivileged anyway, so this — this is working very well for them.'” …. “I ask Razsa if he has a monologue loaded up, in the event that his next encounter was at closer range. To my surprise, the idea doesn’t appeal.  “What do you say? ‘Thanks for School of the Americas, and Iran-Contra, and NAFTA, and shipping all those jobs overseas, and arming Saddam, and funding the Taliban?’ What do you say — ‘You’re a jerk?’ There’s nothing that can be put into a sentence that would capture the lives these people have taken, and the way of life that’s been taken.”

Touring an oil spill twice the size of Exxon Valdez – in Brooklyn, with video (via Treehugger)

EXCERPT: “In 2003, I went on a tour similar to the one in the above video in which he rowed his boat to various disturbing sites of interest while narrating relevant information. You’ll hear him say that beaches are closed when there are 100-200 bacterial spores per 100 milliliters of water and that Newtown has in some places 500,000 to one million bacterial spores per 100 milliliters. If any creek water gets onto your face, he advises not to rub it in your eyes or nose. On my tour, Seggos’s oar flung a drop of water onto my upper lip. Two minutes later I had a burning sore…Recently, the EPA released its report on Newtown Creek (full pdf report here) stating that the greatest threat from the millions of gallons of petroleum is the risk that vapors from the oil could seep into homes and businesses in the area. The report said that about 8.8 million gallons of oil have been recovered since the spill was discovered in 1978, but that at least that much remains in the creek.”

Dan Rather: Tool (Greg Palast)

EXCERPT: “Just three months before the election, Rather had a story that might have changed the outcome of that razor-close race. We now know that Dan cut a back-room deal to shut his mouth, grab his ankles, and let his network retract a story he knew to be absolutely true.  In September 2004 when Rather cowered, Bush was riding high in the polls. Now, with Bush’s approval ratings are below smallpox, Rather has come out of hiding to shoot at the lame duck. Thanks, Dan.  It began on September 8, 2004, when Rather, on CBS, ran a story that Daddy Bush Senior had, in 1968, put in the fix to get his baby George out of the Vietnam War and into the Texas Air National Guard. Little George then rode out the war defending Houston from Viet Cong attack.  The story is stone-cold solid. I know, because we ran it on BBC Television a year before CBS (see that broadcast here). BBC has never retracted a word of it.  But CBS caved. So did Dan.”

“Beginning in February 2008, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will implement their ¨Advance Passenger Information System (APIS),¨ the gist of which is that you will need permission from the United States Government to travel on any air or sea vessel that goes to, from or through the U.S. The travel companies will not be able to issue a boarding pass until you are cleared by DHS. This applies to ALL passengers, US citizens and visitors alike. And how do you get said permission to travel? That´s for your government to know and you to never find out.”

“Now TSA proposes to do for domestic travel what APIS will do for international routes. That´s what I said: the new TSA rule would require that you obtain PERMISSION to travel within the U.S.(Rense)
