Explosive Leaks Provide Image of War from Those Fighting It (Der Spiegel)

Nearly 24 hours after the release of these materials, several things stand out:

1) The government and media have in large part rushed to dismiss the leaked files as ‘old news’, a common disinformation tactic.  The basis for the claim is that the reports end in late 2009, prior to Obama’s ‘surge’ policy.  There is little counter-evidence however, that many of the conditions detailed in the reports have changed since late 2009.

2) At the same time the government dismisses the contents of the leaks, they denounce the transparency as a ‘threat to national security’.  This Wikileaks scoop may provide a justification for further restrictions on data sharing and internet surveillance.

3) Much of the discussion centers on the reports indicating that the Pakistani ISI is involved in providing support to the Taliban (while also benefiting tremendously by ‘playing ball’ with the US).  In 2003, $1 Billion in Pakistani debt was forgiven, and untold billions in military aid have been sent to Pakistan since.  This incident will be used to encourage complacent acceptance of US military escalation in Pakistan, by US citizens and Pakistanis.

Which raises the question – if these are the logical outcomes, what is the purpose of the leak; who benefits?

An eyebrow-raising photograph of one of the anarchists who set fire to a Toronto police car during anti-G20 protests this past weekend shows him wearing Nike clothing, a potential indication that provocateurs dressed up as black-bloc “anarchists” were again employed by authorities to cause mayhem in order to justify a brutal police crackdown and crush free speech, as peaceful protesters were attacked and arrested while the anarchists who torched the cars were left alone.

The picture shows the two culprits who set fire to the police car congratulating each other and looking remarkably relaxed about potentially being caught by police considering what they had just done. One of the men is wearing Nike pants – the distinctive logo of the company can be seen above his left pocket.

Police Lied About Law Demanding G20 Protesters Show ID

The Ontario government has declared that it never passed any secret emergency law allowing police to demand ID from protesters on threat of arrest in the vicinity of the G20 meeting in Toronto last weekend.

Prior to the G20 last weekend in Toronto, the Government of Ontario met in a closed session. Police Chief Bill Blair announced on Friday June 25th that, in this session, a law was passed giving police new powers to demand identification from — and conduct unwarranted searches of — anyone approaching within 5 metres of the security fence that had been erected around the downtown core. This law was enforced all weekend; there were more than 900 arrests. Now that the G20 has passed and the proceedings of the closed government session are coming to light, it’s become apparent that the law never existed at all. Bill Blair has now acknowledged that he made the whole thing up to “keep the criminals out.”

They never “opened fire” but by Canadian standards the public got a shock – a well-thought out theatrical performance – Southern style! “This only happens in places like Mexico,” one protester told me. Helicopters circling the city 24 hours a day, snipers on roof tops, the liberal use of pepper gas, rubber bullets, police on horseback, university campuses and private home raids and arrests (900 and counting), beatings (men and women, young and old of all colors including “white”), intimidation, transportation shut-downs… The list goes on. You know it well! While the Integrated Security Unit might have been slightly milder on the beatings, the rest was standard practice, so much so, I could warn my less experienced comrades what was about to come and it usually came, minutes later!

RAND: A Stability Police Force for the United States

Establishing security is the sine qua non of stability operations, since it is a prerequisite for reconstruction and development. Security requires a mix of military and police forces to deal with a range of threats from insurgents to criminal organizations. This research examines the creation of a high-end police force, which the authors call a Stability Police Force (SPF). The study considers what size force is necessary, how responsive it needs to be, where in the government it might be located, what capabilities it should have, how it could be staffed, and its cost. This monograph also considers several options for locating this force within the U.S. government, including the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Secret Service, the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) in the Department of State, and the U.S. Army’s Military Police. The authors conclude that an SPF containing 6,000 people — created in the U.S. Marshals Service and staffed by a “hybrid option,” in which SPF members are federal police officers seconded to federal, state, and local police agencies when not deployed — would be the most effective of the options considered. The SPF would be able to deploy in 30 days. The cost for this option would be $637.3 million annually, in FY2007 dollars.

We may have been granted a temporary reprieve from forced medical treatments this time around, but have we been spared from the government? As usual, the answer is “no”. While the government may not be forcing a medicine down our throats or corralling uncooperative people in camps, what they are doing should send shivers down our collective spine. They are creating lists of dissidents and “terrorists”. These lists contain detailed information on individuals. And, if ever the laws were changed to permit more coercive action instead of passive data collection then the government would already have the names of the supposed “enemies of the state” on hand.
