Israel accused of executing parents in front of children in Gaza  – Telegraph, UK 1/22/09

One nine-year-old boy said his father had been shot dead in front of him despite surrendering to Israeli soldiers with his hands in the air.  Another youngster described witnessing the deaths of his mother, three brothers and uncle after the house they were in was shelled.  He said his mother and one of his siblings had been killed instantly, while the others bled to death over a period of days.

Alarm Spreads Over Use of Lethal New Weapons – Information Clearinghouse 1/23/09

Eighteen-year-old Mona Al-Ashkar says she did not immediately know the first explosion at the United Nations (UN) school in Beit Lahiya had blown her left leg off. There was smoke, then chaos, then the pain and disbelief set in once she realised it was gone – completely severed by the weapon that hit her.  Mona is one of the many patients among the 5,500 injured that have international and Palestinian doctors baffled by the type of weaponry used in the Israeli operation. High-profile human rights organisations like Amnesty International are accusing Israel of war crimes.  Mona’s doctors at Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital found no shrapnel in her leg, and it looked as though it had been “sliced right off with a knife.”

Secret Israeli database reveals full extent of illegal settlement – Uruknet 1/30/09

The official database, the most comprehensive one of its kind ever compiled in Israel about the territories, was recently obtained by Haaretz. Here, for the first time, information the state has been hiding for years is revealed. An analysis of the data reveals that, in the vast majority of the settlements – about 75 percent – construction, sometimes on a large scale, has been carried out without the appropriate permits or contrary to the permits that were issued. The database also shows that, in more than 30 settlements, extensive construction of buildings and infrastructure (roads, schools, synagogues, yeshivas and even police stations) has been carried out on private lands belonging to Palestinian West Bank residents.

Many people have been shocked and bewildered by the BBC’s refusal to broadcast a national humanitarian appeal for Gaza on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella organization for 13 humanitarian aid agencies.  However, the decision by the BBC’s director-general, Mark Thompson, not to broadcast the appeal should have come as no surprise. In fact, media observers have been witnessing a steady tilt by the corporation towards Israel since the turn of the millennium.

“The Doctor, the Depleted Uranium and the Dying Children” – Grassroots Pece 1/24/09

FLASHBACK – Ringworm and Radiation– Israel Insider 8/19/04

To fool the parents of the victims, the children were taken away on “school trips” and their parents were later told the x-rays were a treatment for the scourge of scalpal ringworm. 6,000 of the children died shortly after their doses were given, while many of the rest developed cancers that killed thousands over time and are still killing them now. While living, the victims suffered from disorders such as epilepsy, amnesia, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic headaches and psychosis.  That is the subject of the documentary in cold terms. It is another matter to see the victims on the screen.

US Senate Endorses Israel’s War on Gaza – Dissident Voice 1/9/09

The US Senate on Thursday passed a non-binding resolution promoted by the influential Israeli lobby AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee), effectively endorsing Israel’s war on Gaza. The resolution, entitled “A resolution expressing solidarity with Israel in Israel’s defense against terrorism in the Gaza Strip” recognizes “the right of Israel to defend itself against attacks from Gaza” and reaffirms “the United States’ strong support for Israel in its battle with Hamas”.

The resolution does not recognize the right to self-defense of the Palestinian people.

Seumas Milne: Having done the diplomatic groundwork for Israel’s assault on Gaza, Tony Blair now talks of ceasefire – Guardian, UK 1/6/09

Blair had three main points. First, there could be a ceasefire, he said – but only if there was “clear action” to cut off Hamas’s arms and cash supplies through tunnels under the Egyptian border. Second, there had to be Palestinian unity to achieve a Palestinian state – but only “on the right terms”. And third, that such a state had to built from the “bottom up” – just as was currently taking place in the northern West Bank, where Palestinians were now “doing” security.

On all counts, his comments reeked of the savage hypocrisy that underpins the west’s role in the current carnage. In fact, so long as Hamas survives in Gaza, there will be no ceasefire based on the closure of tunnels because that would amount to the elected administration’s unilateral disarmament. Such a demand is therefore simply a call for what Blair described as the only alternative: “a protracted conflict”.

Tulsa blogger baselessly smears local Muslims, critic

Michael Bates, right-wing Tulsa blogger and writer for the local weekly rag, published a blog post titled Tulsa Muslim leaders express solidarity with Hamas terrorists on 1/3/09.

When I criticized his description of local religious leaders as inflammatory, and his twisted description of the Israeli invasion of Gaza, he responded “If you believe that Hamas is the aggrieved party, SK, you’re either ignorant or someone who passionately hates Jews. I’m guessing it’s the latter.”

Since I did not make any statements supporting Hamas, following if/then logic, I am neither ignorant nor an anti-Semite.  Mr. Bates refused to publish my reasoned response and invitation to dialogue, so I am publishing it here.  The disinformation tactics Mr. Bates uses are a microcosm of the heavy handed repression that we see around the globe.   Continue reading
