McCain has missed the most votes of any senator – Salon 6/25/08

EXCERPT: “How often has John McCain been away from the Senate? Well, let’s put it this way: At this point, he has missed more votes than even South Dakota Democrat Tim Johnson, who couldn’t work for almost a year after suffering a brain hemorrhage in late 2006. I see today, from Think Progress, that McCain took over the dubious distinction of being the Senate’s most absent member in April of this year, and that CQ Politics says he hasn’t voted since April 8. According to the Washington Post, McCain has missed 367 votes during the 110th Congress, 61.4 percent of those held. Johnson has missed 311 votes, 52 percent of the total. In third place is Barack Obama, who has missed 259 votes — 43.3 percent. Not surprisingly, the next four most absent senators (Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd and Sam Brownback) also ran for president this year.”

Gore Vidal on McCain – NYTimes 6/15/08

“And what about Mr. McCain?
Disaster. Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?
Everyone knows he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.
That’s what he tells us.
Why would you doubt him?
He’s a graduate of Annapolis. I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there.
So what does that have to do with the U.S. Naval Academy down in Annapolis?
The service universities keep track of each other, that’s all. They have views about each other. And they are very aware of social class and eventually money, since they usually marry it.”

When John McCain Was My Captive” – BBC 6/23/08

EXCERPT: “I don’t know how he’d react if he met me again,” said Mr Duyet, flicking through old black and white photographs of himself and his American prisoners at Hoa Lo. “But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners.” So is Mr Duyet implying that that Senator McCain lied about his treatment at the Hanoi Hilton? “He did not tell the truth,” he says. “But I can somehow sympathise with him. He lies to American voters in order to get their support for his presidential election.”
