Lawsuit seeks to ban uranium mining in Grand Canyon – TruthOut 3/13/08

EXCERPTS: “One of the great natural wonders of the world – the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River – is threatened by uranium exploration. Three conservation groups filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging the approval of up to 39 new uranium drilling sites within a few miles of Grand Canyon National Park. In December, the Kaibab National Forest granted British firm Vane Minerals approval to conduct exploratory uranium drilling on national forest lands along the park’s southern boundary with no public hearing and no environmental review. It is the first of five such projects slated for the area….

“The Forest Service claims it has little power to deny uranium development under the 1872 Mining Law. But the mining law does not go against the agency’s separate obligation under the National Environmental Policy Act to carry out in-depth public and environmental reviews of such proposals. “The Grand Canyon is facing a massive uranium build-up at its southern boundary,” said Sandy Bahr of Sierra Club‘s Grand Canyon Chapter. “The mining law doesn’t negate the Forest Service’s duty to conduct detailed environmental and public reviews for new uranium development – and the Grand Canyon deserves at least that much.”…

“More than 2,000 uranium mining claims have been filed since 2003 in the Tusayan Ranger district alone, the majority of them within 10 miles of Grand Canyon National Park, says the Board of Supervisors. Fueled by a 15-fold increase in uranium prices during the last eight years, planned uranium development has increased on federal lands immediately south of the Grand Canyon, where in addition to the 2,000 claims, there are five uranium exploration projects, and the possible opening of one mine.”

Another Chapter in the Saga of Depleted Uranium – JustAnotherCoverUp 4/29/08

EXCERPT: “A ship carrying 6,700 tons of sand contaminated with low levels of hazardous waste at a U.S. Army base in Kuwait during the first Gulf War will be unloaded at the Port of Longview on April 22. The vessel BBC Alabama is delivering 306 containers of the sand, which contains low levels of uranium, to the port, which will then be loaded onto trains bound for a disposal site in Grand View, Idaho, said Doug Averett, the port’s director of operations.”

The Pentagon’s Toxic Legacy – Dissident Voice 5/13/08

“The nation’s biggest polluter isn’t a corporation. It’s the Pentagon. Every year the Department of Defense churns out more than 750,000 tons of hazardous waste — more than the top three chemical companies combined.”

Uranium contamination in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada – Global Research 3/14/08, originally published 11/13/07

EXCERPT: “The urine analysis of the nine Port Hope residents and former nuclear workers revealed all study subjects’ bodies to be contaminated by unnatural species of uranium. Neither Health Canada, nor the other responsible monitoring and regulating agencies – Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Natural Resources Canada, Ontario Public Health, and the Provincial or Federal Departments of Environment list these uranium species as present in Port Hope. Nor do they identify them as potential contaminants to the residents and workers there. We can find no environmental, biological or radiological study identifying these species of uranium in any jurisdiction in Canada“…

“Uranium is an “alpha particle” emitter. Alpha particles are the heaviest and most damaging of all forms of ionizing radiation. Uranium’s radiation is 20 times more damaging – i.e. an RBE – “relative biological effectiveness” – of 20 than Gamma radiation Gamma is the only type of radiation monitored by Health Canada or any agency, in Port Hope. Alpha radiation, its public uptake and the human internal deposition of Alpha emitters is not monitored in Port Hope. There has been insufficient analysis of Port Hope’s unusual patterns of coronary disease and cancers and their possible association with the daily emissions and chronic internal exposure to insoluble radiogenic toxins into the town’s breathing zone.”

Video: Beyond Treason: Chemical and Biological Warfare – Global Research 5/20/08

“Beyond Treason investigates causes of Gulf War Illness and continuing deaths of Gulf War veterans. It outlines: exposure to depleted uranium munitions used on the battlefield, chemical and biological exposures, experimental vaccines given. Statistics show that 250,000 troops are now permanently disabled, 15,000 troops are dead and over 425,000 are ill and slowly dying. Beyond Treason documentary presents comprehensive and compelling documentation from United States Government archives of a massive cover-up lasting over two generations”

“During the Cold War, uranium mines left contaminated waste scattered around the Indians. Homes built with the material silently pulsed with radiation. People developed cancer. And the U.S. did little to help.”
