Bhutto Advisor: Musharraf to Blame (TPMuckraker)

EXCERPT: “Husain Haqqani, a confidante of Bhutto’s for decades [said] “There is only one possibility: the security establishment and Musharraf are complicit, either by negligence or design. That is the most important thing. She’s not the first political leader killed, since Musharraf took power, by the security forces.”  Haqqani notes that Bhutto died of a gunshot wound to the neck. “It’s like a hit, not a regular suicide bombing,” he says. “It’s quite clear that someone who considers himself Pakistan’s Godfather has a very different attitude toward human life than you and I do.”

US troops head to Pakistan (Washington Post)

“Beginning early next year, U.S. Special Forces are expected to vastly expand their presence in Pakistan, as part of an effort to train and support indigenous counter-insurgency forces and clandestine counterterrorism units, according to defense officials involved with the planning.”…. Now, a new agreement, reported when it was still being negotiated last month, has been finalized.”

Hmm, a military agreement they’ve been discussing over the past month  finalized the day of the Bhutto assassination.  And let’s not forget Pakistan’s elections were scheduled to January 8th.  Nothing to see here, move along…

Bhutto Assassination Ignites Disarray (NYTimes)

EXCERPT: “Mr. Minallah said an independent, credible investigation into the assassination was critical, perhaps in partnership with an outside country. A precedent for this, he said, was the investigation into the murder of Ms. Bhutto’s brother 11 years ago. “The government has to allow it,” he said, “because the entire blame is on the government. Everyone I have spoken to believes it is the government that has done this. That makes the investigation of utmost importance.” Apparently no autopsy was done, because the police did not request one, Dawn TV reported. Lawyers calling for an international neutral investigation are raising questions about the speed with which Ms. Bhutto’s body was moved.”
