What is the largest man-made structure in the world? Did you guess the Great Wall of China? The Pyramids of Giza? A fancy new skyscraper in New York or Tokyo? ALL WRONG. The Fresh Kills landfill, Staten Island NY, opened in 1948. The site is 3000-acres in area and, had it stayed open until its planned closure, would have grown to be the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard. As it is, after its closure in 2001 its peak was 25m above the Statue of Liberty. Under local pressure, the landfill closed in March 2001, only to be opened again to cope with the enormous amount of debris created by the destruction of the World Trade Centre. It is now completely shut down, restrictions mean that it should not legally be able to re-open (no landfill site is allowed to open within NYC limits); the site is currently being renovated as parkland and a wildlife facility.
